Our team of experts at Ajax Nissan know that winter driving, especially in Ajax and across the Durham Region, offers a unique set of challenges.
From lake-effect snow squalls off Lake Ontario, blowing snow across the 401 to icy side streets in Pickering and Whitby, driving in the winter requires preparation, patience, and the right techniques.
As part of our commitment to keeping our community safe, we have compiled a list of steps that can help anyone become a more confident winter driver.
Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle Before the Snow Flies
Being ready for winter driving kicks off way before you even start the car. Prepping your ride is hands down the most crucial thing you can do.
Install Four Matching Winter Tires
This is non-negotiable for an Ontario winter. Winter tires use a special rubber compound that stays flexible in the cold, providing crucial grip for turning and stopping on ice and snow. All-season tires lose their effectiveness below 7°C.
Top Up Your Fluids
Ensure your windshield washer fluid is a winter-specific mixture that won't freeze. It's also a good time to check your antifreeze and oil levels.
Check Your Battery and Brakes
Cold weather is tough on batteries. Have yours tested to ensure it has enough cranking power. Your brakes are your most important safety feature, so a pre-season inspection is always a smart move.
Pack a Winter Survival Kit
Be prepared for any situation. Your Winter Road Kit should include:
An ice scraper and snow brush
Extra windshield washer fluid
Booster cables
A small shovel, sand, or kitty litter for traction
A flashlight, warning flares, or reflectors
Blankets, extra warm clothes, and snacks
Our service centre at Ajax Nissan can get your vehicle fully winter-ready. Give us a call to book your seasonal maintenance!
Step 2: Adjust Your Driving Habits
Driving in the winter demands a different mindset. Slow down, be patient, and focus on being smooth.
See and Be Seen
Clear all snow and ice from your vehicle before you leave, including from your windows, mirrors, roof, and all lights. It's not just a safety tip—it's the law in Ontario.
Turn on your full headlights to increase your visibility to other drivers, even during the day.
Slow Down and Increase Following Distance
Drive at a speed that is appropriate for the conditions, which is often slower than the posted limit.
Double your normal following distance from the vehicle ahead of you to at least four to six seconds. This gives you the extra time you'll need to stop safely on a slippery road.
Brake, Steer, and Accelerate Smoothly
Sudden or aggressive inputs can cause you to lose traction. Apply gentle pressure to the accelerator and brakes.
When turning, be slow and deliberate with your steering. If you feel your vehicle start to skid, don't panic. Look and steer in the direction you want to go. Many modern Nissans, like the Rogue and Pathfinder, come with advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control that helps correct for skids automatically.
Be Extra Cautious on Bridges and Overpasses
These structures freeze faster than the roads leading to them and are often the first places to develop black ice. Approach them with caution.
Step 3: Purchase A Vehicle Made For Winter
We know our customers need some of the best cars for snow. Nissan vehicles are engineered to conquer tough Durham Region winters, proven by extensive testing in Canada's harshest conditions.
The key to their performance is Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (AWD). This smart system proactively monitors the road, sending power to the wheels with the most grip to enhance traction before you slip. You'll find this technology in top models like the family-favourite Nissan Rogue.
Whether you need the versatile Rogue, the nimble Nissan Kicks for city streets, or the confident Nissan Sentra sedan, we have good cars for snow to fit any lifestyle. Paired with advanced safety features and winter comforts like heated seats and remote start, a Nissan provides the peace of mind you need.
